The reel layout is part of the round
In a variable-height reel game, the visible arrangement can differ between rounds. The rules determine how many positions each reel can show, how winning matches are evaluated and whether additional rows or special reels participate.
Do not assume that a game using a changing grid uses the same licensed mechanic as another title. Some provider pages use their own names for expanding reels or ways systems. Our individual game notes preserve the source’s terminology and explain the actual mechanic separately.
A simple ways calculation
Imagine an educational five-reel example with visible heights of 2, 3, 4, 3 and 2 positions. Their product is 144 possible position combinations. If every reel instead has four positions, the product is 1,024. Neither calculation gives the probability of a particular prize.
Only qualifying matching symbols count. Direction, minimum length, Wild rules and the prize table still apply. A round displaying fewer combinations may pay more than a round displaying a higher count.
Cascades and multipliers are additional rules
A game can remove winning symbols and refill the grid. That cascade is a separate mechanic from changing reel heights. Likewise, an increasing multiplier or a free-spins round is another feature, not a universal property of every variable-reel game.
Read each stage: initial layout, win evaluation, symbol removal, refill and next evaluation. Then find the condition that ends the sequence. This gives a more useful understanding than combining all of the features into the word “Megaways”.
What a comparison should include
Record the actual provider, evaluation method, possible grid changes, feature-specific behaviour and exact RTP source if available. Treat a missing math model or unverified live configuration as a limitation.
Do not infer a low-risk experience from a large ways count. A complex presentation can coexist with substantial variance and rapid turnover. Keep spending and time decisions separate from a game’s visual complexity.
